New York Times Crossword
August 2, 2020
David Levinson Wilk

Each clue below can be answered with a two-word phrase, the first word normally ending in ING, but with the G being dropped and replaced by an apostrophe. The G is then used to begin what would normally be the second word of the phrase - thus completely changing the meaning of the original phrase. For example, given the clue "Papa drivin' around the lot looking for a space," would be PARKIN' GRAMP instead of the usual PARKING RAMP.

1. Nobody but the guy gettin' married on his feet
2. Winter hand covering you'll be wearin' forever
3. Danger when walkin' in a silo
4. Sayin' "Look, here's the thing about dry land
5. What was causin' the doctor to re-check for joint pain

Answers:

1. STANDIN' GROOM ONLY
2. EVERLASTIN' GLOVE
3. FALLIN' GRAIN
4. QUALIFYIN' GROUND
5. FEAR OF MISSIN' GOUT
