THE LETTERS ARE THE LAW I

Some weird spelling rules are at work here. To decode the groups below, you'll have to first figure out just what those rules are. Here's what to do: First, see if you can recognize the category to which the words in each list belong. Then scan the list's entries to see if you can discern a pattern to the funny spellings.

Once you've done that, you've almost cracked the code. Now try to think of another list entry that would fit the category and provide the "law" governing the spellings.
For example, given the group CAFETEDRIA.....TAVEDRN.....PIZZEDRIA, the category is "places to eat" and each entry shows an extra D. The missing entry is DINER---a word which, when divided, provides the law "D in ER" and also fits the category of a place to eat.
