TWO OLD RIDDLES
1)
My first two letters, though not taught,
Are quickly learned by the littlest tot;
Cold and hard are my last three,
Till they are touched by a flame -
The result of which is that they change their name.
A "T" in between, the two words unites,
And also forms two words in their own right.
While many shrink from my whole, others labor to gain it,
And merit it least when they strive to obtain it.
2)
My first a young woman has always been reckoned,
The middle of pride stands as my second;
A small preposition my next will appear,
And a sign of the zodiac brings up the rear.
These, united, are persons much inclined,
To do what they can for the good of mankind.
