The word "said" is overused in English, at the expense of its many synonyms - which are often more vivid and appropriate to any given situation. But perhaps it's going too far when we say that Gwendolyn Brooks "babbled" or Orson Welles "gushed." How would the following people "say" their lines?
1. Obstetrician
2. Dogcatcher
3. Plumber
4. Dieter
5. Postmaster
6. Prospector
7. Stockbroker
8. Governor
9. Bicyclist
10. Clock maker
Answers:
1. The obstetrician delivered.
2. The dogcatcher barked.
3. The plumber piped up.
4. The dieter expounded.
5. The postmaster addressed.
6. The prospector claimed
7. The stockbroker speculated.
8. The governor stated.
9. The bicyclist spoke.
10. The clock maker chimed in.
