Cut one letter out of each word in the left-hand column and paste a word from the right-hand column into its place to form a new word. For example, in number 1 below, the letter N can be dropped from CANAL and replaced by the word PIT - to spell CAPITAL.
Any letter may be cut from the words in the left-hand column, including the first or last - so you might cut K form KEY and replace it with TROLL to form TROLLEY. Or you might cut the P from ROMP and paste the word ANTIC in its place to spell ROMANTIC.
1. CANAL AGO
2. LID LAST
3. MAN PIT
4. CHIT GRAIN
5. DIES THERE
6. EPIC FELINE
7. LAMA PLIGHT
8. LION SALLOW
9. MICE ONCE
10. TEND UNCLE
HINTS:
The letters to be dropped are:
1. N
2. D
3. M
4. H
5. E
6. P
7. (final) A
8. I
9. C
10. N
Answers:
1. CANAL - N + PIT = CAPITAL
2. LID - D + FELINE = LIFELINE
3. MAN - M + UNCLE = UNCLEAN
4. CHIT - H + ONCE = CONCEIT
5. DIES - E + SALLOW = DISALLOWS
6. EPIC - P + LAST = ELASTIC
7. LAMA - A + PLIGHT = LAMPLIGHT
8. LION - I + AGO = LAGOON
9. MICE - C + GRAIN = MIGRAINE
10. TEND - N + THERE = TETHERED
[From JA: This puzzle, and its other half (posted 1/7/16) received a "less than difficult" rating in GAMES. To me, it is an extremely difficult puzzle - especially without the hints (provided by me). Stephen Sniderman is a brilliant constructor and one of my favorites. GAMES is a nearly perfectly edited magazine. But every once in a while, in my opinion, their rating system fails them. This puzzle rating was one of them. That being said, I realize that one person may struggle mightily over a puzzle, while another solver sees right through it.]]
