FACTUAL RIDDLES XXII

1. Why are movie previews called trailers?
2. What are the four least used letters of the alphabet?
3. What are an aglet, an eyelet, and a grommet?

Answer:

1. The end of a reel of film is called the trailer. At one time, after the feature film, the trailing end of the movie would show a preview of the next movie to be shown at that theater. However, audiences often would leave the theater without waiting to watch the trailer. So theaters began showing the trailer before the movie - making it a preview.

2. J, Q, X, and Z

3. The plastic sheath at the end of the shoelace is an aglet. The aglet makes it easier to pass the shoelace through the hole - which is the eyelet. The eyelet is reinforced by a metal ring. That's the grommet.
