The two answer words to this flat differ by a single letter. The second answer is familiar, but the first one is very obscure.

The law to remarry is, for widows, a gift,
Meant as compassion, to give them a lift.
A brother-in-law is a good second mate;
In the Bible a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ was a mandated fate.

Some laws such as this are no longer in force,
Unlike laws of physics which still hold their course.
To _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ means the law of gravity's done;
Being able to do it makes high-jumping fun.
