Whether to continue the honor system during exams or use a proctor was the subject of discussion in a Columbia University classroom of twenty-two students. When the debate became heated, the professor suggested that it be resolved by means of a vote. Each student was asked to take out a slip of paper, write honor system or proctor, and place it in a box that was sent around. The vote overwhelmingly favored retaining the honor system - 18 to 7.

While I was on my way to work, one of New York's "street people" approached me. I was in a grumpy frame of mind, and, thinking he was about to ask for money, started to brush by when he said: "I'm not asking for anything. I just want to tell you that I wasn't always a bum - I used to dress very well. And I want you to know that your tie doesn't go with your jacket."
