CRYPTO CLUES XXXV
GAMES Magazine
March/April, 1980
Will Shortz

Each clue in a cryptic crossword has two answers - in a way. One, the direct answer by definition, and two, that same answer- but disguised in wordplay. For example, given the clue, His age troubled the Japanese girl, the answer would be GEISHA. A geisha is a Japanese girl, and also an anagram for his age. The first four clues below are also answered with anagrams.

1. Choose an excerpt from the lecture

2. Stumbling across film awards

3. Mark won in a tussle with laborer

4. Tapered off unnecessary regulations

5. Thrashes helplessly with fishes (two meanings)

6. Central European cord (hidden word)

7. Dad-blamed prisoner established an institution (charade clue - two words)

Answers:

1. ELECT (the lecture)
2. OSCARS (across)
3. WORKMAN (Mark won)
4. RED TAPE (tapered)
5. FLOUNDERS
6. ROPE (European)
7. CONFOUNDED (con + founded)
