ACRONYMS - Old and New

POTUS (President of the United States) and SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) are the two oldest recognized acronyms in English. They were first used by telegraph operators in the 1870s. A more modern companion to POTUS is FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) referring to the President's wife.

Texting, the Internet, social media, and even medical advances have spawned hundreds, if not thousands, of acronyms, abbreviations, and initialisms.
