SHROUDED SYNONYMS I

Each sentence below contains a pair of synonyms, but it'll take some work to find them. The letter sequences of the hidden words remain intact, but they can be hard to pick out because of spacing, punctuation, etc. Some of the hidden synonyms can be found entirely within a word in the sentence, while others bridge the gap(s) between two or more words. 
 
Example: Can cell phones ever evoke a sense of nostalgia for simpler times? 

1. Does that factory make clothes, pianos, or widgets?

2. For grandiose architecture, see Kenya's Great Palace.

3. Do not, I certainly advise, let Bob serve dinner.

4. Can cheerful music kill a bad mood?

5. The story took place on a dismally cold night in Yugoslavia.

6. Sheila's sister, Ethel, poured the champagne.

8. Some simple mental exercises were given to older patients.
