PANGRAMS VI

A pangram is a sentence, phrase, or verse containing every letter of the alphabet at least once.  The challenge of pangrams is to use the least number of letters to make the sentence - that is, the fewest over 26 as possible. The closer the pangram is to making sense - or even being clever, the better. Below are two pangrams.

1. NEXT, POUR LIQUID IN MY FIVE DOZEN WASHED JUGS (37 letters) 

2. JACKDAWS LOVE MY BIG SPHINX OF QUARTZ (31 letters) 

PANGRAMS V

A pangram is a sentence that contains all 26 letters of the alphabet. Generally speaking, the fewer the number of letters, the better the pangram. But sometimes the shortest pangrams sound awkward and contrived. The classic pangram, The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,  - with 35 letters - was typed millions of times by prospective typewriter buyers - to check that all the keys worked. Below is a pangram of 41 letters, but one that sounds very natural.

PANGRAMS IV

1. The following seven words contain all 26 letters of the alphabet within 35 letters.

YAK
FLIP
JAZZ
VERGE
SQUAW
EXHIBIT
COMMAND

2. This fairly coherent sentence contains 32 letters:

THE FIVE BOXING WIZARDS JUMP QUICKLY.

3. This "sentence" has 31 letters:

FIVE QUACKING ZEPHYRS JOLT MY WAX BED.

4. This one has only 30 letters:

TWO DRIVEN JOCKS HELP FAX MY BIG QUIZ.

A pangram is a sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet at least once. The fewer letters used, the better the pangram - theoretically. The shortest pangrams usually pay the price of being awkward and near non-sensical.

PANGRAMS I

A pangram is a sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet at least once. The fewer letters used, the better the pangram. The most famous pangram, and the most coherent, is:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. (35 letters)

This pangram was traditionally used to test all the letter keys of typewriters and dates back to 1888.

A slightly improved, but less fluent, version is:

The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog. (33 letters)

Other pangrams:

Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs. (32 letters)

Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz. (31 letters)

Quick wafting zephyrs vex bold Jim. (29 letters)
