BRIEFLY STATED

John Peterman

1. Senator Phil A. Buster of Florida has proposed a law to eliminate from each state's name any letter that is used more than once. Naturally, there would be no cuts from the Senator's home state, but Montana for example, would become MOT. Three states would be reduced to a single letter if the Senator's bill passes. Can you name the letters and the states?

2. What is unusual about the words OUTGOING and RETIRING?

Answers:

1. T, D, and M for Tennessee, Indiana, and Mississippi
2. They are clearly antonyms, but, if you interpret them in a certain way, they can also be synonyms. (Someone who retires is "going out.")
