THREE RHYMING RIDDLES

1)
I'm thought both ugly and attactive,
Both lazy and so active;
Two different stages at two different ages,
Captured in one, and in the other free.
Tell me now, what can I be?

2)
Kings and queens, castles and knights,
Face to face in black and white;
Tiny armies squared up to fight,
Where would you see such a sight?

3)
I sit upon a throne, but I'm not a queen or king,
If you should get in trouble, I might throw you my ring;
I serve those below me, and watch them faithfully,
The water is my kingdom, whether lake or pool or sea.

HINTS:
1. It has to do with metamorphosis.
3. The ring is not the kind worn on your finger.

Answers:
1. Caterpillar/butterfly
2. On a chessboard
3. A lifeguard
