1)
I have four wings, but cannot fly,
Though inseparable are the wind and I;
On the same spot I'm always found,
Toiling away with little sound.
2)
Of all the words we are four,
Rhymes we are down to the core.
One of us is what a pen is for,
Another's brightness can't be more;
The third's a toy soaring through the wind,
The last happens late, you must comprehend.
3)
Do not begrudge me,
For I am the fate all men seek;
Yet am I feared by the strong and the weak.
I can hobble the mighty,
None can my power stay.
What is this danger we all face,
The price of being a part of the human race?
4)
You see me around,
Chained with my brothers;
Shining with a pale, eerie light.
Grown in darkness, an unwelcome guest,
To a woman I'm a beautiful sight.
5)
Without a bridle or a saddle,
Across a bridge I ride a-straddle;
And those I ride, by help of me,
Though almost blind, are made to see.
