John was a conscientious worker with good ideas, but his boss was short-tempered and did not receive suggestions well. John had an idea that he was sure would improve profits, but he was reluctant to approach his boss about it. One evening, after discussing it with his wife, he made the decision to take his chances and present his idea.

When he came home the next day, his wife asked him how things went. "Well, he wants me to serve on his administrative staff in an advisory capacity," John replied. "That's great!" said his wife. "Well, those actually weren't his exact words," John said. "What were his exact words?" his wife asked. "Well, his exact words were, 'When I want your advice, I'll ask for it.'"
