A PORTMANTEAU is a blend of two words into one new word that combines the sounds and meanings of the component words. SMOG is a combination of smoke and fog. MOTEL is a blend of MOTOR and HOTEL. The word comes from portmanteau luggage - a folding suitcase with two compartments, and was first used in this context by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking Glass.
