Each numbered two-word phrase below can be turned into a single word by changing one letter in the first word, then inserting the second word somewhere within that changed first word.

EXAMPLE: Given the phrase BRIERS EAT, change the I to H (making BRHERS), then insert EAT between the R and H, making BR(EAT)HERS. Note: Changing the first word doesn't have to result in a real word. The letter to be changed and the new letter are given as hints below the clues.
