Answers:

1. Kayak - Kayak is a palindrome - the same word reading forward or backward. The other words are perfect anagrams (semordnilaps) - words that become other words when read backward.

2. Night - The other words are commonly followed by numbers: Cloud 9, Final 4, Ground 0.

3. Straight - The other words have only one vowel.

4. Brilliant - The other words are often repeated twice: Encore! Encore!, etc.

5. Jane - The others are unisex names.

6. Divide - The other words, when each letter is capitalized, are made up entirely of Roman numerals: CIVIC, LIVID,  MIMIC

7. Cactus - The other word contain both the hard and soft C sound.

8. Candor - The other words are made up of two smaller words: FAT + HER = FATHER, etc.
