A. CHEMEM

In an INTERLOCK, two smaller words are intertwined in one longer word. For example, the words GOSH and ALES are interlocked in the word GALOSHES (GalOSHes).

In the flat below, the first two sets of blanks are the smaller words, and the final set of blanks is the longer word.

A _ _ _ _ _ of bullets, loud and clear:
Hunting season now is here.
Rabbits scurry, squirrels climb high,
Chipmunks hide, and pigeons fly.
Frightened _ _ _ _ , alert and fleet,
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ly seek a safe retreat.

HINT:
First of the smaller words: SPATE

Answers:
