The original Hopalong Cassidy created by author Clarence E.Mulford in 1904 was a hard-drinking, cursing, street fighter - far different than the clean cut, sarsaparilla-drinking hero who never shot first, featured in 1950's TV. One thing that was the same - Hopalong was shot in the leg during a gunfight - causing him to walk with a little hop, hence the nickname.
