2. Thousand Island salad dressing got its name from the chain of islands straddling northern New York and eastern Canada  in the St. Lawrence Seaway. These islands were a summer destination for the rich. The story goes that the chef on the boat carrying George Boldt, owner of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, and his wife Louise, forgot the salad dressing and made up one from the ingredients he had on board.
