6. Jefferson Davis graduated as a lieutenant from West Point in 1828. He served as Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce from 1853 to 1857. After a devoted romance of three years, Davis eloped with president-to-be Zachary Taylor's daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor, in 1835. Sadly, she died of malaria after only three months of marriage, in New Orleans. Davis mourned her death the rest of his life.
