Why is the lion "king of the jungle" and not the tiger?

Lions don't even live in jungles. They live in grasslands, savannahs, or rocky hills. Tigers also live in these places, but they also live in jungles. Tigers are bigger than lions and just as fierce - even more so. A tiger never backs down in a fight. A lion will. And a tiger doesn't lay around all day while the female does the hunting.
