THE CAT'S PAJAMAS XLIV
(Not from the book by Tad Tuleja)

COLD SHOULDER

This expression, which means to ignore or snub someone, goes back to medieval England where it was customary to give a guest a cold piece of mutton shoulder meat when the host thought it was time for the guest to leave.

BUY THE FARM

To buy the farm is to die. The origins of this relatively new expression are not clear, but it likely refers to pilots dying in plane crashes in WW II and after. The thinking was that after the war, the pilot would want to settle down ....... buy a farm ........ live a quiet life. After a fatal plane crash, his fellow pilots would say he bought the farm - only it was a burial plot.
