Amid racks of rock CDs in a record shop, I finally located the Mozart recording I wanted. I took it to the counter and handed a check to the clerk, who sported a trendy haircut and dangling earring. Expecting my account to be verified, I stood by the register. "You don't have to wait," the clerk said, waving me on. "People who buy Mozart don't write bad checks."

The tour group at the National Bureau of Standards Laboratories in Boulder, Colorado was fascinated by the Atomic Clock, where the time standard for all of the United States is maintained. Naturally, everyone set his or her watch to this master clock that neither gains nor loses more than one second in 300,000 years. The next stop on the tour was a nearby lecture room. The large clock on the wall was seven minutes fast.
