The key words to this flat (ONE and TWO) are homophones. ONE is a single word, while TWO is made of two words.

Under the hand of the sculptor did
   flow,
Lovely and graceful, a dancer on toe.
He'd expertly dealt with a ONE in the
   wood
By fitting his pattern to go where it
   could.
Still, the piece suffered; in fact it is
   TWO.
Grain under strain broke an ear off - - -
   got glue?

Answers:

ONE = KNOTHOLE
TWO = NOT WHOLE
