When Henry David Thoreau was jailed in 1846 for refusing to pay taxes to support the Mexican War, he was visited by Ralph Waldo Emerson who asked Thoreau what he was doing in jail. Thoreau is said to have replied, "The question, my friend, is what are you doing out of jail?"
