PAIRS AND SNARES VII

The words in each group below can be confused. Can you give a simple definition of each one that shows the difference between them?

1. SUPINE - PRONE - PROSTRATE - PROSTATE

2. JIVE - JIBE - GIBE

3. DIE - DYE - DYING - DYEING

Answers:

1. SUPINE - Lying on your back

PRONE - Lying flat on your stomach with the face downward

PROSTRATE - The same as prone, but in an attitude of submission or reverence

PROSTATE - Medical term - a male gland

2. JIVE - Slangy, exaggerated, flippant talk, - especially when used to deceive

JIBE - To be in harmony, agreement, or accord

    GIBE - Jeer, taunt, scoff

Probably due to the similarity in spelling and pronunciation,

JIVE is also used as a variation of JIBE.

JIBE is also used as a variation of GIBE - even though they are near opposites.

3. DIE - Stop living  - DYING
DYE - Change color - DYEING
