CHANGE-O-NYMS

Write a homophone of the first word, then a synonym of that homophone, then a homophone of that synonym - so that the final word is a synonym of the given word. These puzzles are not easy - [especially #3 and 4]. 

Example: given the first and last words BREECHES - STOPS:

BREECHES
BREACHES (homophone of BREECHES)
BREAKS (synonym of BREACHES)
BRAKES (homophone of BREAKS)
STOPS 

1. RODE - ROUGH
2. SALE -PAINFUL
3. PAIR - CHIME
4. MANOR - UNKIND
5. WHOLE - RAIN

    COARSE
    ROUGH
